MDF is a great substrate for Crown moulding.
While it cannot take the abuse of hardwoods like poplar in a heavily trafficked areas like a chair rail, it will not get damaged when installed as crown moulding. Because it is typically less expensive than wood moulding, you can mill larger patterns out of one-piece of MDF for a dramatic finished application.
It can be treated as a flame retardant.
